Promoting a healthy lifestyle – 37th Training Wing

The Health Promotion Department is focused on helping military members and dependents improve their health using different programs and policies focused on the following areas: weight management, tobacco cessation and sleep enhancement.

“If we’re looking at the most important thing, performance improves when people are healthy,” said Joy Schaubhut, 81st Medical Group Health Promotion program coordinator. “There is going to be improved mission readiness along with improved happiness for the individual, making our members more resilient.”

Using evidence-based programs, such as the Health and Readiness Optimization program, patients can make positive changes towards a healthier lifestyle.

Some programs are catered towards specific goals. The “Best SELF” (Shape-up, Eat Right, Live Well, Fit-to-Fight) Weight Management Program helps Airmen improve their fitness test performance by educating individuals to promote healthy eating, adequate activity, quality sleep and stress management.

“We can be more productive at work and feel better during our off time,” said Schaubhut.

Classes can be coordinated with the Health Promotion Department through their primary care provider. or a self-referral. Individuals may also self-refer by emailing or calling Ms. Schaubhut at or 228-376-3171.

The Health Promotion staff also hosts awareness events and information tables at squadron and wing events, providing health and wellness education across base.
