COVID-19 in Wisconsin: New cases at lowest point in 7 months – WBAY

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – Wisconsin’s 7-day average of new coronavirus cases fell to a new months-long low, with the Department of Health Services (DHS) reporting an average 679 cases per day, down from 779 per day. This is the lowest average since the end of July last year.

The DHS says tests identified 340 new cases in the past 24-hour period. There was a net increase of 1,441 cases since Friday’s report, the lowest cumulative increase over a weekend since July 26 (the state doesn’t publish updates on weekends).

The positivity rate is below 5% for the first time since the end of July as well. The DHS says 4.6% of all tests in the last week were positive for the COVID-19 virus. One month ago that was over 20%.

The state received 34 reports of COVID-19 deaths since Friday, but data from the DHS indicate only two of them were recent in the past 30 days. Six counties in Northeast Wisconsin accounted for 13 of the deaths: Brown, Dodge, Fond du Lac (2), Marinette (3), Outagamie (5), and Shawano. The DHS says the 7-day average is unchanged at 11 deaths per day.

Over the weekend, 87 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment. That nudged the 7-day average from 55 to 56 hospitalizations per day, by our calculations. Since the pandemic began, 4.25% of cases resulted in hospitalization.

The Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) reported Monday there are 505 COVID-19 patients, including 88 in ICU. That’s 38 fewer patients in ICU and 91 fewer people in hospitals since Friday after taking discharges and deaths into account with the new admissions. It also marks the first time since August 2 when there were fewer than 100 COVID-19 patients in ICUs around the state, when it was also 88 patients. The state hasn’t had fewer than 500 COVID-19 patients at one time since August 9, 2021, so we’ll be watching that.

In the Northeast health care region, there are 64 COVID-19 patients, including 10 in ICU, among 10 hospitals — 4 fewer in ICU and 10 fewer patients overall since Friday. Fox Valley region hospitals have 38 patients, 6 in ICU — that’s 1 more in ICU over the past three days but 4 fewer patients overall.

According to the DHS, 63.9% of Wisconsinites received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. 60.4% of the population completed their vaccine series, including 32.6% of Wisconsinites who’ve received a booster dose. The DHS says almost two-thirds (66.1%) of seniors 65 and older have received a booster. The next closest age group is 55 to 64 year olds at 47.3%.

There’s still about 6% of the state’s population that’s too young for any COVID-19 vaccine.

* You can find cases and deaths for all 72 Wisconsin counties on the DHS County Data website. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and Wisconsin Hospital Association publishes updates Mondays through Fridays. Michigan Department of Health updates information on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

** Cases and deaths are from state COVID-19 reports, which may differ from local health department numbers. The Wisconsin DHS reports cases from all health departments within a county’s boundaries, including tribal, municipal and county health departments; county websites may not. Also, public health departments update their data at various times, whereas the DHS freezes the numbers it receives by the same time every day to compile the afternoon report.
